ELECTRICAL POWER PRESS RELEASE - 11/13/2009

Today the electrical grid that serves the North Country has experienced an interruption in service on one transmission line. Power utilized in the City of Plattsburgh is provided from several sources. These sources include local large and small power gereration, a line to and from Vermont which was recently scheduled for routine maintenance, and a power feed through NYSEG and National Grid electric power lines. Earlier today, a local energy generating facility experienced an unexpected shutdown and will most likely remain off-line until late Monday. There is some uncertainty as to the source of replacement power through Monday evening. One replacement source may be electrical power generated from local wind turbines. The remaining power lines are currently operating at close to their capacity. If the power capacity is affected there is a possibility that the City of Plattsburgh and outlying areas could experience power blackouts.

Municipal Lighting Department Manager Bill Treacy and city line workers are prepared to address any power issues that we will be facing.

Temperatures are moderate for this time of year which could benefit the local power usage; however, the possibility of temporary power shutoffs does exist.

We would appreciate the residents of the City of Plattsburgh to make ever effort to conserve electricity by keeping thermostats at a comfortable level and minimize your electric usage through Monday.
